Combatting Hate: What Lawyers Can Do & Why They Must

Yesterday’s session at DLA Piper Toronto brought together a full room of legal professionals committed to responding to the sharp rise in hate and intolerance across Canada. With police‑reported hate crimes more than tripling over the past 15 years, and Jewish and Catholic communities facing repeated acts of vandalism, arson, and violence, the discussion could not have been more timely.

Our distinguished speakers offered legal, strategic, and community-focused insights:

  • Warren Kinsella – Lawyer, Author, Political Strategist, Founder of Daisy Consulting Group
  • Eli Mogil  – Commercial Litigation Partner, McCarthy Tétrault
  • Sheryl Saperia – CEO, Secure Canada; Senior Fellow, Macdonald-Laurier Institute
  • Joseph Neuberger – Criminal Defence Lawyer, Founder of Neuberger & Partners; Chair, Canadian Jewish Law Association

Together, they explored the responsibilities lawyers carry, as advocates, advisors, and community leaders, in confronting the surge in hate-motivated incidents. Their perspectives underscored both the urgency of the moment and the unique capacity of the legal profession to drive meaningful action.

Thanks to strong engagement, thoughtful questions, and shared commitment, the event was a resounding success.
