Combatting Hate
What Lawyers Can Do & Why They Must
Wednesday, April 29, 2026, 11:45-1:15, DLA Piper, Toronto
Hate is on the rise in Canada. Police-reported hate crimes have surged, more than trebling in number over the past 15 years. The vast majority of hate crime targeting religion is aimed at the Jewish community. Synagogues, Jewish schools and community spaces, and Jewish-owned businesses have been repeatedly targeted with vandalism and even gunfire and firebombing. B’nai Brith Canada recorded a record-breaking 6,219 incidents of hatred targeting Jews in 2024. Hate crimes and incidents directed at Catholics are far fewer, but Catholics have not been spared. Dozens of Catholic churches have been destroyed or damaged by arson over the past few years, while others have been vandalized.
Join us as we discuss what lawyers can do, and why they must, in response to rising levels of hate and intolerance in Canada.
